The psyche of reforms A history of some social and institutional developments in Italy after World War Two, especially regarding the problem of reforms in mental health policies, is reviewed. The following topics, among others, are discussed: the transformation of an agriculture-based culture into an industrialized culture, research on social psychology (mostly imported from the US) and the diffusion of psychology, relationship between a scientific culture and a culture based on the humanities, the problem of excessive specializations, the role of intellectuals, human resources’ management and the building of a ruling class, bureaucracy, interdisciplinary approach, team work, the relationship among efficacy, efficiency and efficientism, transformation of Community Mental Health Centers’ management into institutions operated under the principles of a private company, leadership and power hierarchies, economicist trends in psychiatry.
