In the last fifteen years there has been growing interest for quality of life in cancer patients. Unlike women with breast cancer - for whom for years psychological support and psychoeducational interventions have been provided - women affected by gynaecological cancer cannot count on such a wealth of resources and are therefore at higher risk for social isolation. The present study aims at investigating in a sample of 67 inpatients at the Ward of Gynaecology, San Raffaele Hospital (Milano, Italy) need for psychological intervention and the presence of indexes of psychological distress (anxiety and depression) and the relationship of the latter with variables related to treatment. Our data suggest that, although anxiety and depression are frequently associated to hospitalization, no significant differences emerged between patients with and without a diagnosis of cancer. A need emerged for a psychological support to patients, together with the necessity of providing psychological skills to doctors and nurses. Our results, although preliminary, can help shedding light on the psychological needs of patients with gynaecological disorders.
