This essay examines the experience of republican Fascism in Valtellina, seen within the context of WWII, German occupation, economic collaboration and partisan resistance, with the purpose of filling a gap in a historiography that has so far treated, yet separately, the question of the projected republican alpine entrenchment in Sondrio province and the vicissitudes of the local partisan movement. The A. investigates the elements of local republican Fascism and the dialectic they gave life to at ideological, political and administrative level — a dialectic that very seldom ended up in overt clashes and was strongly conditioned by the economic and social situation of the province, poor in resources and plagued by the circuit of parallel economy, insufficient food stockpile and distribution, inefficient rationing and price control, inexistent transport, generalized nonfulfillment and misappropriation. In the framework of the role assigned to Valtellina by the Germans on the one hand and by the RSI on the other, the A. expounds the relations developed between republican Fascists, German occupiers and their collaborators, as well as the attitude of partisan forces towards each of these enemies.
