The relation between non-Muslim minorities living in the Ottoman Empire and Islamic courts has been amply scrutinized by scholarly studies. In the last few decades, research on the topic has mostly been based on courts’ records. Even though the use of these documents has unfolded many aspects of non-Muslims’ use of Islamic courts, many questions still remain unanswered. This article compares Jerusalem Islamic court records with some documents drafted by the local Franciscans and discusses to what extent the analysis of Christian documents may cast a new light on extrajudicial forms of dispute resolution.
