Between the rise of Fascism and the overt construction of the dictatorship in 1925-26, the relationship between the Italian Jews and Fascist power was not on an inevitable track towards conflict. Part of Jewish culture committed to the national or religious awakening and in particular some Zionists shared with Fascist culture some of the themes and topics typical of the latter. The article analyzes the strategies of the Italian Jewish community in a difficult period, marked by concerns about antisemitism, internal fractures and measures such as the Gentile school reform, which on the one hand put at risk the principle of equality, but on the other seemed to open the way to the fight against assimilation.
