Four major cities in Italy: Trieste, Milan, Bologna and Rome. Four university professors called to take the role of councillor in urban planning. Four different urban and political contexts are presented by the same protagonists in the following articles. From each contribution are emerging some common issues that give interest and originality to the dossier. The reader will have the opportunity to learn about the individual experience, through the main text and the ‘box text’ that deepen individual issues, projects and actions. Finally, a cross-reading is also proposed in the text by Cristina Bianchetti, which focuses on links with urban research
