The war of brigandage was an asymmetric and limited civil conflict. The civil war led to a massive mobilization of the unitary movement. The men of the Italian nation and their expression in the former Neapolitan provinces, although divided on crucial issues, were compact compared to the need to complete the national revolution at any cost and define the public space, getting rid of the vanquished or, in any case, preventing any cost every attempt to revenge, conquering the institutions and establishing itself as a ruling class. This article discusses the characters and representations of the war offered by regional institutional groups and actors to understand the real weight of the southern political class in determining the forms of repression and their political legitimacy, as well as the common ground within of the Italian national movement.
