After an autobiographical introduction on her love for literature and poetry, the author reflects on the use of words in psychoanalysis and on the digging work necessary for the search for a pregnant word in the particular emotional situation of the analytic room. Following the suggestion of the Irish poet S. Heaney, in Digging, what we learn from poetry opens up a route to a less technical psychoanalysis, more uncertain and doubtful, that delicately suggests, other than stating with certainty. Short clinical stories illustrate the transformative value of words, their ability to reverse a problem, seeing new meanings and new qualities of physical and emotional life. Along the lines of Bion’s and Ogden’s thought, "trust" and "faith", as psychical conditions, match in an original way. Perhaps psychoanalysis may learn from Judeo-Christian sources the "so to say" and the search for the "seventy-first sense".
