This essay testes the historiographic thesis that eclecticism in economic thought has nefarious eff ects on welfare with reference to Germany during the Weimar Republic and in the globalisation period (1989-2020). The cases analysed show that theoretic confusion or an obsolete paradigm enhanced the role of politics in the economy and the adoption of economic policies, economic attitudes and institutions that endangered the welfare of the population, while at the same time nationalist and populist sentiments spread widely.

Keywords: Weimar Republic, globalisation, Germany, history of economic thought, J. C. L. Simonde de Sismondi, neo mercantilism.
