Objectives
The paper analyzes the relationship between local socio-political change and economic development as a result of the political transformations that have invested the Veneto Region. The focus is on the medium and short term transformations in the industrial district of Thiene.
Methods and Results
Results are based on two types of analyses. The first one regards the medium term transformations of the productive structure during the decade between the census of 1991 and 2001. The second one analyzes the short term transformations occurred in the five years period 2001-2006. In the medium period perspective, the image of the local production system drawed by the 2001 census is not too different from that of 1991: the overall employment increases while the occupation in textile and mechanical productive specializations remains stable. In the short term, the erosion of the occupational basis in the sector of specialization continues, while the outsourcing from the industrial district increases. In other word, the local production system essentially maintains the overall occupational rate, with a little increment of the employed. Nevertheless the manufacturing sector occupation reduction is balanced by the increase of workers in the services sector, especially in the "services to the enterprises".
Conclusions
In a strong dynamic regional context, the industrial district of Thiene shows an increasing trend of occupation similar to other regional local systems. The manufacturing occupation decrease is compensated by the increase of the occupation in the "services to the enterprises", that indicates a "complementary outsourcing". In this context, leading enterprises play a strategic role by creating a supply chain network rooted in the territory.
