We find here published, for the first time in its completeness, the correspondence exchanged between the distinguished historian Delio Cantimori and the politician Antonio Giolitti, a constituent father of the Italian republic, during the period 1946-1955, when both of them were members of the Communist Party and regular contributors to the projects of the Einaudi publishing house. The exceptional relevance of their dialogue lies in the fact that, gaining from a growingly solid friendship, it extends its scope to the great issues of the cultural debate of the time (the role of intellectuals in society, the features of a communist cultural policy, the relations between marxism and Christianity as well as between historiography and sociology, the judgement on the protagonists of Italian socialism), up to the point of touching, though occasionally, questions of burning interest even today, such as for instance the knot capitalism/free market. Soon afterwards, the Soviet invasion of Hungary would upset both Giolitti and Cantimori, who however reacted differently even though both abandoning the Communist Party, and finally drove their dialogue to silence.
