The aim of the paper is to analyse the efficiency of a sample of Italian public transport companies in order to compare different situations and to address policies able to improve the current organization of the sector. The analysis is focused on 18 public transport companies operating in different urban areas. The study is conducted using a non parametric methodology with the aim to highlight the efficiency level of the Italian local public transport sector. The article is composed by five sections: starting with an introduction to the study (S1), follows an analysis of some financial characteristics of the sector (S2). Section 3 is dedicated to the research methodology while the following paragraph describes the results of the research. Section 5 addresses some conclusions and policy indications based on the analysis’ results.
