This paper analyses the impact of the expansion of low cost carriers (LCC) on foreign tourism trends in Italy in the leisure market. We rely on a novel data set about the seats on flights operated by low cost carriers between foreign destinations and each Italian airport, complemented with information on tourism receipts and other statistics from the monthly Bank of Italy International Tourism Survey. We estimate a cointegrated vector autoregressive model for Italy. We find a single equilibrium relation, linking the level of LCC supply to the dynamics of the global business cycle, of relative consumer prices and of foreign tourists’ leisure expenditure. According to our structural impulse-response analysis, both foreign tourists’ arrivals and expenditure increase in Italy after a positive shock to LCC supply. An exogenous 10 per cent increase in LCCs supply determines a 1.7 per cent gain in Italian receipts from international tourism.
