This contribute tackles a matter so far all but unexplored, the domestic consumption of Italian families since the Seventies, sketching a map of research paths suitable for a promising investigation into such a field. Along with a panoramic survey of the trend of domestic consumptions in the recent past of republican Italy, the A. explores the close interdependence of household environment and family life stories, stressing the elements of continuity and dynamism under three main aspects: the role of home ownership in the patrimonial behaviour and in the collective imaginary of the Italians; the transformations occurred to the Italian families during the republican period, following migratory processes, total redefinition of familial care, generational and gender conflicts; to end with the middle-class domestic cultures along the "global protest" years and the new "miracle" of the Eighties.
