In the last decades, production and distribution of counterfeited goods have significantlyincreased worldwide, due to the enhancement of Made in Italy industrial firms and the growing attractiveness of brand-name products for customers. Numerous are the sectors affected by counterfeiting of both goods and trademarks; this phenomenon seems to be a "structural" feature of the today’s economic systems, involving manufacturing enterprises (both regular and illegal), different types of distributors (especially the abusive ones) and citizens. This paper is aimed at analyzing factors as well as technical, economic and social characteristics of counterfeiting, and intends to highlight the linkages between those variables and the changes occurred in Italy about manufacturing operations, distribution systems and consumption patterns in the past years. In order to reach this goal, the paper examines also the interdependencies between those issues and organizations’ behavior, in relation to the ever-changing way of doing business induced by globalization.Counterfeiting appears as a system of illegal activities, which are not however disconnected from value chains and manufacturing districts. By analyzing the social and economic effects of counterfeiting and the damages it provokes to several and different subjects (companies, workers, the State and citizens), specific laws are required to counteract illicit behaviors by criminal organizations; this will allow to safeguard Made in Italy products and the virtuous Italian firms operating in a legal way.
