This article outlines the urban identity of Syracuse from the end of the 18th century to the end of the 19th century as described in guidebooks, by comparing the travel literature produced throughout Europe by grand travellers who had been to the city with the local historical publications and guidebooks produced for foreign tourists. Only the latter, by listing places of daily life and services, really record the emergence of a modern city from the image of Syracuse as the fabulous Greco-Roman pentapolis which had been consolidated after the 1600s.
