The paper adopts a proximal approach to describe safety in construction. The approach conceives safety as the result of an ecology of interorganizational actions involving a multivocal and conflictual constellation of materials, discourses and social worlds. On the basis of the result of an empirical research conducted in Northern Italy, the essay describes the process of negotiation, alliance, conflict and resistance through which the heterogeneous element positions themselves within an action-net to produce a durable and recognizable effect, i.e., safety as conceived in a particular locale. The paper argues that "safety" results from the nature and work the action-net as a whole and it cannot reduced to one of its aspects or discursive representations of one of the parts.
