Vincenzo Ferrone’s essay explores the traditional dualism between religious and temporal power that existed until the eighteenth century affirmation of the separatist model. Today the opposition between the two powers has emerged again in the claim to redefine the relationship between politics and religion: broad sectors within the Catholic church and pope Benedict XVI invoke a new and healthy laicity, that in reality aims at relegating the old separatist scheme of Church-State relations and assigning to Christianity a new role in the public sphere.
