The meta-analyses on the efficacy of psychotherapy for anxiety disorders are reviewed, and the main trends are examined. There are several meta-analyses on cognitivebehavior therapies (CBT) specific for anxiety disorders, but no meta-analyses on psychodynamic therapies (PDT) specific for anxiety disorders, only some randomized clinical trials (RCT) and meta-analyses on PDT for heterogeneous patients. CBT is efficacious for anxiety disorders, but often it is not compared to other therapies. There are some RCT on PDT for specific anxiety disorders (e.g., panic) that show the efficacy of psychodynamic therapy. Recent meta-analyses on long-term PDT for difficult patients with comorbidity (including anxiety disorders) show the superiority of psychodynamic therapies. Further studies are necessary, but it seems that psychodynamic therapy, differently from the past, shows evidence of its efficacy.
