Residential Private Enclaves: Misleading Myths and True Challenge of Residential Associations (Paper first received, July 2008; in final form, December 2008) Abstract This paper analyses residential communitarian associationism in the United States, i.e. residential areas defined, in common speech, Gated Communities. And are precisely misleading myths gathered around Gated Communities in last decades (reducing to the features of these a broadly diversified phenomenon), that, in the first part, this paper aims to call into question, arguing the deep variety of communitarian associations. Only in this way it is possible to fully understand and analyse the real challenges that these residential models pose to mainstream conceptions about city and land use, as the author tries and starts to do in the second part of the paper.
