This paper traces the development of gestalt therapy from the perspective of its founding institute in New York City, the New York Institute for Gestalt Therapy. From the time of Fritz and Laura Perls’s arrival in New York after World War II, the NYIGT has been the source of gestalt therapy’s continuing development within gestalt therapy’s original framework. Attention is paid to the social field, the contact-boundary, the sequence of contacting, and the field-emergent self. Laura Perls, Isadore From and Richard Kitzler were influential trainers. The NYIGT model continued to develop with differing emphases. The NYIGT’s structure itself developed into a non-hierarchical teaching/learning community. The NYIGT continues to develop and explore gestalt therapy.
