Bridging the gap between the psychic and the social: the impact of psychoanalytic work on the community - The author examines how psychoanalysis can deal with far-reaching social problems far beyond private practice. Psychoanalytic concepts are relevant to any setting. Psychoanalysis facilitates self-reflection and focuses on details of perception and feelings. It helps us not to avoid painful experiences and to restrain pedagogic interference. Associations of ideas play a significant role in show ing new points of view and unblocking thoughts. Moreover, psychoanalysis teaches us how to handle countertransference, which is an invaluable tool in a community, where difficult relational situations and the power play between roles tend to block emotional growth. A lot of colorful examples are given by the author in his pleasant exposition.
