The recent arrival to Italy of a French film about "Balzac" (director Josée Dayan) in coincidence with thirty years from the death of the critic and writer Roland Barthes, offers the opportunity to think again to the well known Barthes critical essay, entitled S/Z, that is an analysis about Balzac’s novel called Sarrasine. In this essay Barthes proposes a critical theory which destroys any pretension to a text interpretation and to researching in it "definitive meanings"; this theory, therefore opens the way to that discussed critical orientation called "deconstructionism". But viewing the film about Balzac and reading the Journal de deuil, the diary written by Barthes for two years after his mother’s death (published this year in an Italian Edition by Einaudi) it is possible to find profound analogies between Barthes’ conflict with his mother and the relationship so much dramatic that Balzac had with his own mother.
