The paper studies the pattern over time of inequality of educational opportunities (Ieo) in post-ww2 Italy, and the interaction between it and the pattern of Ieo by social origins, measured both as class of origins and parental educational level. The analysis uses the two main Italian stratification dataset, namely the Indagine nazionale sulla mobilità sociale (1985) and the Indagine longitudinale sulle famiglie italiane (1997). The pooled data of both datasets are analyzed by means of a cumulative logit model (ordered logit), that allows to model both schooling inequality and the expansion of participation to school. Results confirm in general what was already known: gender Ieo has diminished, as social origin Ieo did, although to a lesser extent. Moreover, our analysis shows that: a) the decline of gender Ieo takes place at the higher educational levels, while compulsory school still shows a male bias; b) this decline is stronger in the agricultural classes, where the male advantage was stronger; c) besides this, the pattern of decline of gender Ieo is the same for all classes of origin and for all parental educational levels.
