The deep connection/link between theory and practice that characterizes action-research helps to delineate a more comprehensive and realistic perspective on the relationship between the individual and the social world thanks to the competences of practical action which action research assigns (ascribes) to human beings. This activity has allowed our species to transform the environment and to produce the social-historical world in which we live, and it is through action that people are able to effectively intervene in situations, to cope with individual and collective problems and to make changes in the social environment. Following the historical and social events through which it is formed, a practical domain is outlined in which the «social» comes out from any general and non-historical vision and becomes a situated context of events, resources and constraints, conflicts and solidarity. To this frame and to the people located in it are given specific psychological dimensions on the basis of the thought of James and the theoretical and empirical work of Lewin.
