In our time the concept of the individual has underwent a deep transfor mation. The crisis of the idea of the subject as a transparent centre of ratio- nality previously constituted as independent from any social relation, has given way to the acknowledgment of the essential vulnerability of the individual, of the limits of his capacity to control the surrounding world or even himself. The new attention to the contradictions of existential situa tion, to the founding character of intersubjectivity, to the dynamic of mu tual recognition is orienting philosophical and sociological theory to a conception of subjectivity conscious, at the same time, of the irreducible singularity of each individual and of the deep links of the latter with social reality, thus avoiding both the opposites of repressive communitarism and limitless individualism.
