A substantial body of research showed the associations between children’s use of psychological terms during conversation and their understanding of mental states. Children’s use of internal-state language and emotion understanding were investigating in a sample (N = 120) of 6 to 9 year olds. Children’s emotion comprehension was assessed using the Test of Emotion Comprehension while the use of internal-state language was assessed by the Mind-Mindedness task. Results showed significant differences in emotion understanding and in the use of psychological descriptions of their friends among children of different ages. Children’s use of internal- state language was not related to emotion understanding. The authors suggest that children’s spontaneous use of internal state language could be independent of their capacities for representing those internal states.
