In Italy, thanks to the expansion of neo-feminism, the regulation of abortion became a crucial issue in the public debate. Indeed abortion was considered an indictable offence by the fascist criminal law that was still in force in the 1970s. The discussion involved all the political parties and saw women movements in the front-line. In the Pci, the matter was posed to the whole party by the Group of the women activists which promoted abortion as a primary issue, obtaining a fair law in the matter. The greater sensitivity of women’s Group was also due to the constant contact with the Udi members that initially were in disagreement with the neo-feminists, and then converged to a similar, but never common, position. From a political point of view it was hard to draft the bill: the parliamentary debate came up against lots of obstacles, but finally, the bill no. 194 was passed thanks to the Pci’s ability to mediate between secular and catholic requests, the former pro liberalization, the latter pro preservation of the indictable offence.
