The aim of this study was to supply a first Italian adaptation of the Safety Attitude Questionnaire (SAQ), an instrument widely used in the Anglo-Saxon contexts to measure the safety culture. The Italian version, translated from English, was administered to 660 health care professionals (nurses, obstetricians and physiotherapists) coming from several hospitals of the Emilia Romagna and working in different areas (Medicine, Surgery, Maternal and Surgery room areas). Results showed a factorial structure which is only partially similar to the original one. Three factors have indeed been detected: a Proximal factor composed by items referring to activities linked to everyday work (i.e. safety climate and working climate), a Distal factor composed by items referring to aspects that are distant from everyday work (i.e. organization) and a Stress factor. These three factors resume the six factors which have been detected in researches from other countries. Moreover, the three factors show a good content validity, acceptable fit indexes and structural invariance across working areas. Albeit preliminary, present results highlight some specificities referring to the meanings that safety culture assumes in the Italian context.
