Ever since the first studies of Masters and Johnson (1966, 1970), there has been a great deal of research exploring human sexuality in many countries. These were focused primarily on heterosexual behaviour, considering, for example, issues such as stress, quality of life, physical and mental well-being, relationship status. The paucity of research, and the little attention paid in the current literature to describe similar associations in the homosexual population is surprising, especially regarding the causes and the incidence of sexual problems. To better understand this issue, various theoretical perspectives about sexual dysfunction in gay men and the personal distress associated with were examined, considering peer-reviewed articles published internationally between 2001 and 2010.
