This article investigates the ideologies underlying beliefs in demoniac possessions and exorcism practices, in order to identify common aspects and psychological mechanisms. The phenomenon is analyzed by considering the religious but also psycho-pathological aspects with particular reference to the concepts of splitting and projective identification. Within the context of the attachment theory the issue of dependence and belonging to sectarian groups is argued analyzing the possible common personality traits among its followers.
