The reference to the domain of sport, in the works of Eric J. Hobsbawm, is frequent and meaningful. This paper affords a reading approach tending to point out the connections enlightened by the British historian between sport and such historical processes as the ascent of the bourgeoisie, women emancipation, the development of a working-class culture, the formation of national identities. Hobsbawm’s effort to focus the symbolic components, both cultural and social, of the attitudes of class, gender and national groups toward sport, fits in perfectly with his studies of the culture, mentality and life experience of men and workers in contemporary society.
