During the first half of 1943, the outstanding historiographer of philosophy Mario Dal Pra (1914- 1992) forsook his Catholic-moderate outlook, still submitted to the clerical hierarchy, for an overtly lay adhesion to democracy, political participation and hence to the Resistance. Drawing on rare and as yet unknown papers, the present essay describes this crucial turn in Mario Dal Pra’s life, which brought him to become a partisan cadre inside the Party of Action, and after the war a co-founder of the Istituto nazionale per la storia del movimento di liberazione in Italia (Insmli). In the A.’s opinion, this conversion was favored by his keen reading of the works of Pietro Martinetti, the only Italian philosopher who had refused to swear allegiance to the Fascist regime in 1931 and who in his late years, under the influence of Kant’s moral conception, would thoroughly criticize the dogmatism of the Church.
