The work supports the thesis that the cultural district could be a valuable model to inspire and guide local development policy. The model described highlights the differences between the industrial and tourism district, exploring the variety of configurations it can take and the different ways in which local actors and resources can contribute to create value. Despite a considerable wealth and variety of conceptualizations proposed in literature, the cultural district emerges as a model characterized by its basic consistency and for its own originality. It results as a pattern able to activate sustainable development based on "culture" as central asset and main driver of innovation and growth. However, evaluations have to focus long term impacts and values such as creativity, attractiveness on social capital in the area, in addition to economic values and impacts.
