In this article the author examines the panic attacks as an expression of the dread of psychological change perceived as a threat against the Self stability and coherence, but also as necessary and ineluctable. Most of all such psychological change concerns an unresolved conflict between independence and dependence, wich hinder the elaboration and integration of affects, both negatives, such rage and fear, and positives, as love, pleasure, and erotic excitement. The difference between panic anxiety and anticipatory anxiety is underlined, and two brief clinical vignettes are described. Moreover some aspects of the myth of Pan are emphasized, strictly connected with the psychological themes described.
