This essay explains how, in the Modena province, the economic planning of the local communist and socialist authority, at the origins of the industrial districts, benefited from the contribution of a local wing of the Christian Democrat party: the "catholic left" led by Ermanno Gorrieri. The activity of this group, mainly aimed at both the industrialization of the depressed areas of the low Po Valley and the touristic development of the Appennini uplands, helped the local administration work out of a policy combining economic growth with welfare progress. After reconstructing the course of the "Modena catholic left" from the Catholic Action to the Resistance and the later connections with the Dossetti faction, always in the light of its peculiar political culture, inspired by a democratic anti-communism competitive with the marxist movement on the same terrain, the A. examines its vicissitudes during the years of the "economic boom" and the first centre-left government, marked by the discussion on economic planning, in which Gorrieri and his group took actively part, constituting an example of reception and reworking "from below" of the theory of economic dirigisme.
