The sexuality of a couple encounters a number of changes during various stages of life such as pregnancy, puerperium and perimenopause. Several studies have found a decrease in the frequency of sexual intercourses during pregnancy and puerperium, stressing that mostly the psychological factors, and partly the biological and the contextual ones, affect the quality of the sexual life. In addition, the high risk of unwanted pregnancies in the first six months postpartum draws the attention of the scientific community to the need of an in-depth analysis of the suitability of different contraceptive methods in relation to their effects on breastfeeding, and on the health of the newborn and of the woman.
