Thought experiments and other "third spaces" of learning. Starting from their crucial role in philosophical and scientific research, the aim of this article is to show the implications of thought experiments as education and learning tools. The hypothesis is that thought experiments provide access to a "third space" in which we can "feel" and "observe" relations and intermediate links that usually we can’t feel nor observe. In this perspective, thought experiments can be correlated with other types of "third space", in which human beings evolve discovering and facing their ambiguity: from Winnicott’s "third area" to Bettelheim’s "playing room", from the "intermediate worlds" of illusion studied by Iacono to learning experiences which refer to "mindfulness" and "social dreaming".
