The Istituto Serafico in Assisi houses children and young adults with severe and very severe disabilities. In addition to the activities of rehabilitation, education and assistance, professionals are often called to face health needs of other types, resulting from pathologies that require specialized interventions, instrumental diagnostic procedures, hospital admissions. Since the onset of symptoms there are management issues that interfere on one side with the routine of the rehabilitative and educational treatments and on the other side with the need to follow regular diagnostic protocols established by the various medical specialties. The article discusses also on a one-year statistic concerning the requirements of health interventions, not directly depending on disability. Critical issues are examined and criteria for review of protocols in use are proposed, in order to adapt them to the condition of severe disability, following some examples already active in two large Italian hospitals.
