This paper analyzes the evolution of the Italian firms’ demography in highly industrialised areas for the period 2000-08, putting this evolution in comparison with firms’ demography in other areas. We examine the heterogeneity among and within the main economic sectors and the role of firms’ characteristic such as type, size and geographic localisation. Using data Infocamere-Movimprese and applying both the methodologies of industrialised areas selection identified by Sforzi and Iuzzolino, we show that firms’ demography worsened during the period, as a result of a higher tax of exit and a lower tax of entry. The evolution of the demography was worse in the highly industrialised areas, due - mostly - to the individual firms’ behaviour. Our econometric analysis finds a statistical correlation between demography and firms’ productive sector, whereas any other considered characteristic turned out to play a negligible role.
