Between 1932 and 1936, publishing house Utet printed "La Scala d’Oro", a scaled collection for children, which enjoyed a huge success right from the start. Creators and directors of the series were Vincenzo Errante and Fernando Palazzi, a germanist and a magistrate who gave their services to the publishing world. Employees of many publishing houses, they conceived their project during their work at Mondadori, in an attempt to respond to the changes that were sweeping the educational book market, following the imposition of the Testo Unico for the elementary school. However, misunderstandings between the directors and Arnoldo came to switch to Utet. Several correspondents wrote to Palazzi about the publication of the series: from these letters it appears that the pros of the series were the wise choice of texts, which mixed old and new to provide the young reader a vast array of knowledge, and the rich illustrative apparatus, manufactured by the best artists.
