The A. examines the chief traits of the stay at Grumo Appula, a village of central Puglia, of Yugoslav former internees, refugees and partisans, and of the memory they left behind in popular recollection, thus developing and deepening the results of a laborious reconstruction of the vicissitudes of Yugoslav groups operating in the ranks of the Italian partisan struggle, narrated in the miscellaneous book I partigiani jugoslavi nella Resistenza italiana. Storie e memorie di una vicenda ignorata. Drawing on a variety of sources, the A. confirms the important role played by Puglia both as a base behind the lines for the combatants in the Apennines as well as in the Balkans (zone of recruiting, training and assignation of the overseas Brigades destined to join the People’s Liberation Army and Partisan Detachments of Yugoslavia) and as terrain of delicate mediation among the different subjects acting in the area during the period of Allied occupation.
Keywords: Puglia, Yugoslav partisans, Italian Resistance, Overseas Brigades, Allied occupation of Italy, People’s Liberation Army and Partisan Detachments of Yugoslavia
