During World War II, the exploitation of millions of foreign workers, Italian included, was not only an indispensable support of the military effort of the Third Reich but also a pillar of the domination system the Germans set up all over continental Europe. After a brief survey of the extension of the phenomenon and of the relevant literature, the A. focuses her attention on the Italian case, particularly as regards the mopping-up of civilians to be employed as manpower carried out by the Germans in Summer and Fall 1944, prevalently behind the lines and often in connection with massacres of civil population and raids against partisan forces. The roundup of laborers and their deportation to Germany should be placed and analyzed in the broader context of war and violence imposed on the Italians by Nazi occupiers in the years 1943-1945.
