This essay examines certain reflections proposed in Lavoro, salute, sicurezza. Uno sguardo lungo un secolo (Fondazione Giuseppe Di Vittorio, Annali, 2010, Roma, Ediesse, 2011), starting from the industrial accidents and occupational diseases affecting the Italian labourers at the end of the 19th century and pointing out their greater incidence as compared with the situation of the principal European nations. From a brief survey of the evolution of public health and of the modalities with which the Italian trade unions have tried to defend the psychophisical equilibrium of the Italian blue and white collars, the A. reaches the conclusion that the Italian industrial development - more than elsewhere among the civilized countries - has been characterized by a scarce consideration for health and environment.
Keywords: Health, work, trade unions, factory, environment, Italian industrial development
