The theoretical identity of the so-called "philosophical counseling" is discussed, and the scientific status of this helping profession is examined. The differences with psychotherapy, particularly with "psychodynamic therapy" (PDT), which is an application of psychoanalytic theory, are discussed. It is argued that all theoretical and clinical variables of philosophical counseling are already included in the tradition of the psychoanalytic movement, and also that it is a conceptual mistake to consider philosophy and psychoanalysis on the same logical plane or to counter each other. From a psychoanalytic viewpoint, philosophy is an "object" of analysis as other aspects. Philosophical counseling is essentially a type of psychotherapy, which is differentiated as a trademark for market purposes and has to be regulated by professional organizations or governmental agencies. The real problem is the training of these mental health professionals.
