The adhesion of Italy to the North Atlantic Treaty in 1949 meant its definite siding with the Western powers. The contribution to common defense implied the transformation of a considerable length of its national borderlines into a frontier of the Western alliance. This essay revisits the process of militarization undergone by the territory of a borderline region, Friuli Venezia Giulia, through the practice of military easement, not without resentment and resistance by both the population and local authorities against the intrusiveness of the national Armed Forces and the US bases. Worn out by the late Fifties the ideological protest of the Peace Partisans movement, along the Sixties and Seventies it was the movement of the mayors of the municipalities of Friuli Venezia Giulia, urged by economic concerns, that forced the revision of the legislative framework of military easement with the Law December 24th 1976, n. 898.
