The main problems of DSM-5, which is the Fifth Edition of the Diagnostic and Statistical Manual (DSM) of Mental Disorders of the American Psychiatric Association, scheduled to appear in May 2013, are presented. In particular, the proposals of DSM-5, some of them (for example the "Psychotic Risk Syndrome") later withdrawn due to widespread criticisms, are discussed. Robert J. Spitzer and Allen Frances, heads of the task forces of the two previous DSMs (DSM-III and DSM-IV, respectively) led a campaign against the DSM-5 process with a petition signed by about 15,000 metal health professionals around the world. This campaign succeeded in obtaining some changes but did not prevent the premature publication of a flawed DSM-5. Finally, what Allen Frances believes to be the DSM-5’s eleven most potentially harmful changes are listed.
