The author wonders about the meaning attributed to tertium, spatial and temporal recurring reference in the work of Jung. Proceeding from symptom to symbol, and from words to images, she presents the transcendent function as a bridge, both interpersonal and intrapersonal, which allows patient and analyst to create a space, with sacrifice, where to place at the same time the real and the potential, the immanent and the transcendent. The material of the patient, which is reborn and contained in the present by the setting and the analytic relationship, becomes a third element, new psychic energy released and available for the healing process. From this point of view, the sandplay too is presented as a third place where eventually to represent and dismiss old and new forms of existence and experience: touching the complex and leaving the archetype to resonate, patient and analyst proceed on the path of individuation where they are, t times, guardians and thieves.
