The phenomenon of urban development that engulfs the space allocated to agriculture, that Americans generally call sprawl, and increased extensive, detailed, and linear pressures, put in place, especially in our country, a process of exponential growth of marginal agricultural areas and important impact on the conservation of biodiversity and rural landscape. In this sense, the Common Agricultural Policy (CAP) and Structural Funds for rural development can provide important supporting mechanisms to enhance and preserve the rural landscape. In this essay the author, in the attempt to understand how policies address the issue of rural landscape, critically traces the evolution of "environmental" and future "landscape" of such policies, also investigating the role of landscape in the European strategies of rural development in the 27 member state of EU for the programming period 2007-2013.
Keywords: Common Agricultural Policy (CAP), rural development, Rural Development Plans (RDP), Agriculture, rural landscape, multifunctionality
