The deep tension between universalism and particularism, individual and group, that characterizes the current debate on citizenship seems to be influenced by different theories of language. The aim of this paper is to disclose the philosophy of language that underlies Kymlicka’s conception of multicultural citizenship and to compare it with some opposing conceptions: the pragmatic universalism of Searle, the critical constructivism in anthropology (Amselle) and sociolinguistics (Edwards and Joseph) and the "complex cultural dialogue" model of Benhabib.
Keywords: Complex cultural dialogue, Constructivism, Multicultural citizenship, Particularism, Realism, Universalism.
